PAINTING WITH LIGHT

Classical/Neoclassical painting and create a similar composition that matches the painting’s dramatic use of light and shade. For large paintings with numerous lighting examples and subjects, you can extract certain portions to recreate if they have enough dramatic lighting detail.

Subject Painting: Morning Sun by Edward Hopper

Video Editing

Editing & Sound Sync done by myself on: Adobe Premiere, Adobe After Effects.

Objective:
Based on a preexisting edited sequence from a movie or TV show, produce a
45-second(minimum) video sequence that creates a new genre/story that is noticeably
different from the original.

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR [SPORTS/COMEDY[
ORIGINAL SUMMARY OF MOVIE:
A freak accident causes 12-year-old Little League player Henry (Thomas Ian Nicholas) to
become such a powerful and accurate pitcher that the Chicago Cubs sign the junior high
student to a contract. Unprepared for such a high-pressure environment, Henry falters until
aging fastballer Chet Steadman (Gary Busey) takes him under his wing and teaches him how
to play in the big leagues. Meanwhile, his mother's venal boyfriend (Bruce Altman) tries to
sell Henry's contract to a hated opposing team.

ALTERED VERSION:
Serial murderers are after a small suburban kid, entering his life as a friendly person.

Pixilation

Pixilation filmmaking technique where live actors and objects are shot frame-by-frame to simulate movement. This results in an animated-looking movie, where a human, and the things around them, move without being touched. The actor can often appear jerky or smooth, depending on gaps of motion between each frame. Similar to stop-motion, both are shot frame-by-frame.

Painting with Light Process Deck
Painting with Light Process Deck

Process Deck for:

Choose 1 Classical/Neoclassical painting and create a similar composition that matches the painting’s dramatic use of light and shade. For large paintings with numerous lighting examples and subjects, you can extract certain portions to recreate if they have enough dramatic lighting detail.

Produce 3 still images that showcase 3 different lighting variations. The stills should match the proportions of the original painting. RGB, 16-bit, 300ppi.

Based on one of the 3 lighting setups, create one 10-second video that compliments the theme, story, and mood in the composition.

Document your process. Include the stages of development.

Getting started:

Research and choose your painting. If you cannot decide between a few options, present them in class or on the discussion boards. (be prepared to show in class)

On top of your painting reference, draw/indicate your painting’s light source(s), direction(s), and other notable characteristics. (be prepared to show in class)

Next, create a lighting diagram for your scene. (be prepared to show in class)

Begin setting up your scene.

Details:

Your 10 second video should be shot horizontally, so consider your scene and framing when setting up your shoot.

The video does not need to have a lot of movement. Focus on simple light motion, shadow play, atmosphere, wind or gentle breeze, etc. to help add another dimension to your story/scene.

Your final video should have a strong, identifiable connection to the lighting and composition represented in your chosen painting. Take time to plan, execute, and shoot (& reshoot) your scene.

Audience: Even though this is an exercise, consider and choose an audience for your piece and be prepared to discuss during your WIP presentations.
